“I think what you’re going to see this president do today is show up for the community, be there for the community in the hardest time,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters aboard Air Force One on the way to Louisiana. “To the families and loved ones of those we lost in this horrific act of terrorism last Wednesday, I know events like this are hard and the shock and pain is still so very raw,” Biden said during the prayer service. “My wife Jill and I are here to stand with you, to grieve with you, to pray with you, to let you know you are not alone.”
She went on, speaking about Biden’s own understanding of loss, and said: “He believes this is also an important part of the job that he believes he needs to do as president.” He offered comfort to the families of the victims: “The day will come when the memory of your loved one will bring a smile to your lips before a tear to your eye. It will take time, but I promise you, I promise you it will come. And when it does, you may find purpose in your pain.”
