Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet among stars gathering for Golden Globes Demi Moore leads Oscar race after Golden Globes win
(1 day later)
Zendaya is nominated for her performance in sports drama Challengers Demi Moore recalled being told earlier in her career that she was a "popcorn actress"
The Golden Globe Awards take place later, with Emilia Pérez, Conclave, Anora and The Brutalist in the running for the top prizes. Demi Moore has made a triumphant return to the Golden Globes, winning best actress for a role in a body horror which has revitalised her career.
Film acting nominees include Zendaya, for tennis drama Challengers, and Timothée Chalamet for his starring role in Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown. The 62-year-old gave an impassioned speech as she collected her award, telling the audience she was "at a low point" in her career before being cast in The Substance.
Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are both up for their roles as sorcery students in Wicked, the musical adaptation of the hit stage show, while Daniel Craig is nominated for 1950s romance Queer, Demi Moore is up for body horror The Substance, and Nicole Kidman for erotic drama Babygirl. Moore said the award was a celebration of "the gift of doing something I love and being reminded that I do belong".
Kate Winslet has two nominations - for Lee, a film about war photojournalist Lee Miller, and for her leading TV role in political satire The Regime. Selena Gomez is also up for two - for the film Emilia Pérez, about a Mexican drug lord who changes gender, and TV mystery comedy Only Murders in the Building. Other film winners included Emilia Pérez, The Brutalist and Wicked, while Baby Reindeer and Shōgun won the big TV prizes.
The event marks the first major ceremony of the film awards season, which culminates with the Oscars on 2 March. One of the night's big surprises was Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres winning best drama actress for her tremendous performance in I'm Still Here, which held off competition from Hollywood A-listers Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman.
The Globes will be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on Sunday evening, beginning at 01:00 GMT on Monday for UK audiences. 'Popcorn actress'
A win at the Globes can help boost a film's profile at a crucial time, when Bafta and Oscar voters are preparing to fill in their nomination ballots. Moore was a fixture at the Globes in the 1990s and 2000s, but was only won an award for the first time this year. The Substance sees her play a woman who trades her body for a younger, more beautiful version of herself.
But the Globes is a much less formal event than the Academy Awards, with celebrities generally in a good mood after the Christmas break, ready to mingle over a few drinks and have fun with their acceptance speeches. Moore said she was "in shock" after winning in such a competitive category, which also included Anora star Mikey Madison, Wicked's Cynthia Erivo, and Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón.
The main film contenders: "I've been doing this a long time, over 45 years, and this is the first time I've ever won anything as an actor," she said.
10 nominations - Emilia Pérez The red carpet in pictures
7 - The Brutalist The winners and nominees in full
6 - Conclave Host Nikki Glaser's best jokes at the Golden Globes
5 - Anora, The Substance Zendaya engagement rumours and other Globe highlights
4 - Challengers, A Real Pain, Wicked, The Wild Robot How to watch the Golden Globe-nominated films
The Golden Globe nominees in full "Thirty years ago, I had a producer tell me that I was a popcorn actress and at that time, I made that mean that [awards] weren't something that I was allowed to have, that I could do movies that were successful, that made a lot of money, but that I couldn't be acknowledged," Moore said in her acceptance speech.
Baby Reindeer, Shogun and The Bear are among the shows competing in the TV categories. "I bought in, and I believed that, and that corroded me over time, to the point where I thought a few years ago that maybe this was it, maybe I was complete. I've done what I was supposed to do.
In recent years, the voting body behind the Globes has expanded and diversified its membership and brought in a new code of conduct. "And as I was at kind of a low point, I had this magical, bold, courageous, out-of-the-box, absolutely bonkers script come across my desk called The Substance, and the universe told me that you're not done."
The changes follow a scathing investigation by the LA Times in 2021, external which exposed various ethical lapses, such as voters accepting "freebies" from studios and PR agencies lobbying for nominations. Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón accepted the prize for best musical or comedy film
Which films are nominated at the Globes? Emilia Pérez, a Spanish-language musical about a Mexican drug lord who changes gender, won four awards, making it the top film winner.
A Real Pain has four nominations, including two for its stars Kieran Culkin and Jesse Eisenberg Accepting the prize for best musical or comedy film, trans actress Karla Sofía Gascón told the audience: "I want to say to you, raise your voice, and say, 'I am who I am, not who you want'."
The Golden Globes split their film categories by drama and comedy/musical, which allows them to nominate more movies and hand out more prizes than other ceremonies. Her co-star Zoe Saldaña was named best supporting actress, telling the crowd in an energetic acceptance speech that her "heart is full of gratitude".
The film with the most nominations is Emilia Pérez, a largely Spanish-language musical about a dangerous cartel leader who wants to quit the world of crime and live a new life as a woman. "I'm so blessed to be sharing this moment with my fellow nominees," she said. "I know this is a competition but all I have witnessed is just us showing up for each other and celebrating each other and it's just so beautiful."
However, several of its 10 nominations are in the same categories - with two nods in best original song and two in best supporting actress. The film also won best original song and best non-English language film. Accepting the latter prize, director Jacques Audiard said: "In these troubled times I hope Emilia Perez will be a beacon of light."
Other contenders in the musical/comedy category include Anora, the story of a New York stripper who falls for the son of a wealthy Russian oligarch. Saldaña gave an emotional speech as she accepted the award for best supporting actress
The Substance, which sees a woman trade her body for a younger, more beautiful version of herself is also nominated, along with A Real Pain, about two cousins travelling across Poland after the death of their grandmother. The Brutalist, a three-and-a-half hour film about a Hungarian architect who builds a new life in the US after World War Two, won three prizes, including best drama film, and best actor for Adrien Brody.
Mikey Madison is nominated for her performance in Anora, which won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival Brady Corbet was named best director, and acknowledged in his acceptance speech that the film wasn't a traditional proposition.
In the drama category, acclaimed historical epic The Brutalist follows a Hungarian architect who tries to build a new life for himself in America following World War Two. Nobody was asking for a three-and-a-half hour film about a mid-century designer," he joked.
It's up against Conclave, based on the 2016 novel by Robert Harris, which depicts a group of gossipy and scheming cardinals who gather in Rome to select the new Pope. "I was told that this film was un-distributable, that no-one would come out and see it, that the film wouldn't work, and I don't resent that.
Nickel Boys, about two young men forced to attend a reform school in 1960s Florida, and September 5, which dramatises the terror attack on the 1972 Munich Olympics from the perspective of the sports journalists who covered it, are also in the running. "But I want to use this as an opportunity to lift up filmmakers... Films don't exist without the filmmakers. Please let's support the filmmakers, let's prop them up."
The other drama contenders include the sandy sci-fi sequel Dune: Part Two and A Complete Unknown, about Bob Dylan’s rise to fame in the 1960s. Sebastian Stan, who had two Globe nominations, won for his performance in A Different Man
Blockbusters including Deadpool & Wolverine, Twisters, Inside Out 2, Gladiator II and The Wild Robot will compete for the cinematic and box office achievement award, which was introduced last year to recognise more mainstream films. Sebastian Stan was named best actor in a musical or comedy for A Different Man, which sees him play a character who drastically changes his appearance.
Dune: Part Two was not submitted in that category despite its huge financial success, reportedly because the film's producers wanted Globe voters to focus, external on its artistic merits. "Our ignorance and discomfort around disability and disfigurement has to end now, we have to normalise it and continue to expose ourselves to it, and our children, encourage acceptance."
That means if members want to vote for the film, they will have to do so in the main categories. Kieran Culkin held off competition from his Succession co-star Jeremy Strong to win best supporting actor for his performance in A Real Pain, about two cousins who travel across Poland in memory of their grandmother.
Which actors are in the running? "The first ever acknowledgement I got as an actor was a Golden Globe nomination when I was basically a kid," Culkin recalled. "Now, it's like the best date night my wife and I ever have."
Pop stars Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande are nominated for Emilia Pérez and Wicked respectively Culkin was named best supporting actor for his performance in A Real Pain
There's a much higher chance of an actor being nominated at the Globes, where there are 36 slots available, than at the Oscars, which have 20. Wicked missed out on the major categories, but took home the box office achievement prize, following in the footsteps of Barbie's win last year.
As a result, the Globes are able to lean in to big celebrity names, ensuring their ceremony is well attended by A-listers, not all of whom will necessarily go on to score an Oscar nomination. Accepting the award, Wicked's director Jon M Chu paid tribute to the movie and stage musical's loyal fanbase.
British acting nominees this year include Daniel Craig (Queer) Kate Winslet (Lee), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked) Hugh Grant (Heretic), Tilda Swinton (The Room Next Door) and Felicity Jones (The Brutalist). "This is for you, the fans out there, who came to the movie theatres, brought your friends and family, we saw your videos, your singalongs, your make-up, hair products, bakery items," he said.
They are joined by stars including Angelina Jolie (Maria), Nicole Kidman (Babygirl), Demi Moore (The Substance), Glen Powell (Hit Man), Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown) and Zendaya (Challengers). "It shows us how important making this stuff is, in a time when pessimism and cynicism rule the planet, that we can still make art that is a radical act of optimism."
There are two pop stars in the race - with Ariana Grande (Wicked) and Selena Gomez (Emilia Pérez) both in the running for best supporting actress. There was a surprise but welcome winner in the animated feature category, which saw box office juggernauts The Wild Robot and Inside Out 2 beaten by Flow, a film about animals who must work together to survive following a flood.
Other well-known nominees include Amy Adams (Nightbitch), Pamela Anderson (The Last Showgirl), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing) and Denzel Washington (Gladiator II). "This film was made by a very small, young, but passionate team, in a place where there isn't a big film industry, so this is the first time a film from Latvia has been here so this is huge for us," said director Gints Zilbalodis.
Denzel Washington is among the Hollywood A-listers nominated, for his role as Macrinus in Gladiator II Torres became the first Brazilian actress to win the award for best drama actress, an award which her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, was also nominated for in 1999.
The supporting actor category will see two former Succession stars go head to head - Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) and Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice). "This is such an amazing year for female performances," Torres said. "I want to dedicate this to my mother - she was here 25 years ago, and this is proof that art can endure through life."
Strong's co-star Sebastian Stan has two nominations - one for playing Donald Trump in The Apprentice and one for A Different Man. Fernanda Torres won best drama actress 25 years after her mother was nominated in the same category
But some of the strongest contenders this awards season aren't necessarily Hollywood A-listers, such as relative newcomer Mikey Madison (Anora), Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), Brazil's Fernanda Torres (I'm Still Here) and Russian actor Yura Borisov (Anora). Shōgun was the big winner the TV categories, taking home four prizes including best drama series.
Away from the top categories, other notable nominees include singer Robbie Williams in the best original song category, for Forbidden Road, from his biopic Better Man. Other TV winners included The Bear's Jeremy Allen White, True Detective's Jodie Foster, and Hacks star Jean Smart.
Two of this year's winners have already been announced: Viola Davis will take home the Cecil B DeMille Award, for outstanding contribution to film, while Ted Danson will be honoured with the Carol Burnett Award, for excellence in television. Baby Reindeer was named best limited series, which was accepted by its writer and creator Richard Gadd.
Who is hosting the Golden Globes? "A lot of people ask me why a show this dark has gone on to be the success that it has," he said. "And I think in a lot of ways, people were crying out for something that spoke to the painful inconsistencies of being human.
Nikki Glaser said she hoped to continue the Globes tradition of making jokes about the A-listers in attendance "For a while there's been this belief in television that stories which are too dark and complicated won't sell and no-one will watch them, so I hope Baby Reindeer has done away with that theory, because right now, when the world's in the state that it's in and people are really struggling, we need stories which speak to the complicated and difficult nature of our times."
The Globes have traditionally had excellent taste in hosts, regularly enlisting an acerbic personality to make cutting jokes about the A-list guests. Baby Reindeer's Scottish writer and creator Richard Gadd accepted the prize for best limited TV series
They are continuing that model this year with US comic Nikki Glaser, who gave a barnstorming performance at The Roast of Tom Brady last summer. British actress Jessica Gunning was named best TV supporting actress for her portrayal as a stalker in the hit Netflix series.
Glaser said she was "absolutely thrilled" to be hosting the Globes, adding she was looking forward to getting a "front row seat" at "one of my favourite nights in television". In her acceptance speech, Gunning shared an anecdote about getting a hamster for Christmas as a child, and thinking that she couldn't believe it was happening to her. She said that phrase had become the "soundtrack of my life this year".
"It's one of the few times that show business not only allows, but encourages itself to be lovingly mocked (at least I hope so). (God I hope so)," she said in a statement. "Thank you to Richard Gadd, Baby Reindeer has changed my life in ways that I can't even explain. I can't believe this is happening to me," she repeated, "and I know that eight-year-old me wouldn't either, she'd be chuffed to bits."
"Some of my favourite jokes of all time have come from past Golden Globes opening monologues when Tina [Fey], Amy [Poehler] or Ricky [Gervais] have said exactly what we all didn't know we desperately needed to hear. Irish actor Colin Farrell won his third Golden Globe, for playing the Batman villain Penguin in an HBO series of the same name.
"I just hope to continue in that time-honoured tradition (that might also get me cancelled). This is truly a dream job." On stage, he joked that he had "no one to thank" and "did it all by myself".
How to watch the Golden Globes Recalling the three hours it took to fit him with prosthetics to make him the bloated villain in his latest film, he said: "In the morning, I drank black coffee, listened to 80s music, and I became a canvas for that team's brilliance."
Viola Davis, pictured in November, will receive the prestigious Cecil B DeMille Award Farrell also said: "Thank you for employing me. And yeah, I guess it's prosthetics from here on out."
US viewers can watch the show live on the CBS network, which is airing the Globes as part of a five-year deal.
It will also stream on Paramount+ with Showtime. The ceremony starts at 01:00 GMT and usually lasts between three and four hours.
UK viewers without a VPN can expect to see highlights on social media, YouTube and news bulletins on Monday morning.
