Snow and freezing rain have swept parts of the UK, with some areas covered by amber weather warnings told to expect considerable disruption. A number of UK airports - including Manchester and Liverpool - have closed their runways due heavy snow overnight causing delays, cancellations and diversions.
Runways at Manchester and Liverpool airports were shut early on Sunday morning while teams worked to clear the snow. All incoming flights have been diverted away from Manchester Airport due to being unable to land, a spokesman told the BBC.
One amber weather warning has been put in place for Wales, while another covers from the Midlands up to Manchester. Less severe yellow weather warnings are also in force for parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and elsewhere in England. "Nothing is landing at the moment – the last plane to land was a TUI flight from Cancun at about 0600," he said.
At least 12 Manchester-bound planes have had to land at London Heathrow, Birmingham, Dublin, Glasgow and Paris, according to tracking website Flightradar24.
Liverpool's John Lennon Airport said teams are "working hard" to clear its runway, while flights to and from Leeds Bradford Airport have been cancelled or delayed.
