Snow and low temperatures have shut schools in north and north east Scotland. The Met Office has warned of more snow followed by heavy rain over the weekend.

The Met Office has issued a yellow "be aware" warning for further snowfall on Saturday followed by rain and a thaw later that night, external.

But it has forecast more bad weather over the weekend and has a warning in place for much of Scotland, along with parts of Wales and northern England, from 04:00 Saturday to 09:00 Sunday.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Mike Silverstone said: "Winter hazards will gradually diminish through the weekend, though they will hold on longest in northern Scotland.
"Substantial snowfall is expected across much of northern England and Scotland for a time on Saturday, mainly over higher ground."
The RAC said drivers in some areas were having to contend with some of worst road conditions seen so far this year.
On Thursday, a fallen tree closed the A9 north of the Black Isle's Tore Roundabout for a while and snow caused challenging driving conditions on the A87 near Invergarry.
