Spain has been hit by torrential rain and hailstorms, triggering flash flooding across multiple regions. At least 51 people are known to have died after torrential rain caused devastating flash floods in south-eastern Spain.
At least seven people have been reported missing after being swept away by floods and travel has been disrupted. Footage uploaded to social media shows floodwaters causing chaos, knocking down bridges and dragging cars through the streets.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said in a post on X he was following reports of missing people "with concern". In the town of Chiva near Valencia more than a year's worth of rain fell in just eight hours and local officials say it is "impossible" to put a final figure on the number of people who have perished.
The state meteorological agency has issued red, orange and yellow alerts for thunderstorms and heavy rain across the eastern and southern part of the country. More than 1,000 troops are being deployed to help with the rescue operation, as scores of people remain unaccounted for.
