Emergency services are at the scene after two trains crashed. A man has died following a low-speed collision involving two trains in Wales, British Transport Police (BTP) has confirmed.
Network Rail and Transport for Wales (TfW) said the crash happened between the 18:31 BST service from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and the 19:09 service from Machynlleth to Shrewsbury, at about 19:30 on Monday. A further 15 people have been taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing, the force said.
The crash happened near Llanbrynmair, in Powys, and the line is closed while emergency services work, a joint statement from the operators said. All other passengers have been been evacuated from both trains.
"Our main priority is the safety of our passengers and colleagues," it added. The crash happened near the village of Llanbrynmair, in Powys, at around 19:30 BST on Monday.
The lines between Machynlleth and Caersws are also blocked, TfW said, and Dyfed-Powys Police has closed the main A470 trunk road in Talerddig advising drivers to avoid the area. The services involved were the 18:31 from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and the 19:09 from Machynlleth to Shrewsbury.
Residents reported a large emergency services presence including road ambulances and an air ambulance. Traffic Wales said the A470 was closed in both directions between Caersws and Glantwymyn, while Transport for Wales said rail replacement services were in operation.
A coastguard helicopter is also at the scene, as well as firefighters. The incident was attended by the ambulance and fire services, local police, and the coastguard, with support from the rail industry, BTP said in a statement.
British Transport Police is understood to be in charge of the incident. Residents reported seeing an air ambulance at the scene.
It said the crash happened at "low-speed". BTP said the family of the man who died had been informed and was being supported by specialist officers.
"Paramedics, fire and rescue, and Dyfed-Powys Police are all in attendance and the incident is ongoing," a spokesman added. It also said local residents would see an increased police presence in the coming days as officers worked to understand the circumstances leading up to the collision.
Writing on X earlier, Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan said: "My thoughts are with all those involved in the rail incident in Powys earlier this evening.
"I would like to thank the emergency services for their response and have asked to be kept informed of any developments throughout the night."
