People living in south London are being encouraged to get their hands dirty and help plant 30 trees as part of a project to turn the streets green.

The charity Trees for Cities is currently working to introduce 50 trees in the area by March 2008.

As part of the scheme 24 trees will be planted in Margate Road and Appach Road, Brixton, on Monday. A further six will be planted elsewhere in Brixton.

People will be able to hang tree wishes during an official planting ceremony.

Positive impacts

Margaret Cobbold, of the Veolia Environmental Trust which gave the scheme £25,000, said it was designed to make Brixton a greener place to live and work.

"This project will have several positive impacts on the environment and the lives of people living in the area," she said.

Graham Simmonds, of Trees for Cities, said: "London desperately needs more street trees and I am thrilled to see Brixton getting even greener.

"It's also a great opportunity for local communities to get together and do something worthwhile for their local environment."

A ceremonial tree will be planted in Margate Road between 1400 GMT and 1600 GMT.
