Teenager charged with stab murder Teenager appears on murder charge
(about 19 hours later)
A teenager has been charged with murder following a stabbing in a Newry estate on Thursday night. A teenager has been remanded in custody charged with murder following the fatal stabbing of a father-of-four in Newry.
Stiofan Loughran, a taxi driver and father-of-four in his early 40s, died after being stabbed in Derrybeg estate. Michael Jason Smith, 18, of Main Avenue, appeared before Newry Magistrate's Court charged with the murder of Stiofan Loughran on Thursday.
It is thought he was trying to break up a fight when he was stabbed at least twice at Third Avenue. He died later in hospital. A police inspector told the court he believed he could connect the accused to that charge and one of assault on one of Mr Loughran's sons.
An 18-year-old man has been charged with murder and assault and is to appear in court on Sunday. He confirmed, in response to defence questions, he co-operated with police.
The incident happened at about 1930 GMT on Saturday. He also said the accused had "shown remorse for whatever his role was" in the incident.
It is not clear what weapon was used in the stabbing, but it is thought that it may have been a sort of hand tool. Mr Smith was remanded in custody until next month.
