UN officials said the force was aiming to secure a school being used by gang members as a base and weapons store. A UN spokesman said the troops had forced a major criminal gang out of its headquarters in the slum.

Crosshead here Fierce resistance
The UN's commanding officer in Haiti, Maj Gen Carlos Alberto Dos Santos Cruz, said the troops were essentially mounting a police operation. UN spokesman David Wimhurst told the BBC that Friday's operation was the largest incursion into Cite Soleil yet attempted by the UN.
"We had a raid to try to arrest the criminals and recover their weapons they have inside this place," he told the Associated Press. Troops entered an area of Cite Soleil known as Boston, the stronghold of a gang leader known only as Evans.
Much of the fighting was reported to be taking place in an area of Cite Soleil known as Boston. Evans has been blamed for kidnappings, killings and rapes in the areas under the control of his gang.
That area is thought to be under the control of a gang leader known only as Evans. There was fierce fighting and heavy resistance from gang members, Mr Wimhurst said, but few reports of casualties.
The spokesman said the UN forced gang members out of a school they had occupied, and out of their major headquarters, known as Jamaica Base.
"That means Evans no longer has a base in Cite Soleil," Mr Wimhurst said.
