An ambulance was stolen and badly damaged while paramedics were answering an emergency call on Teesside.

A passer-by called police after spotting a man had jumped into the driver's seat of the vehicle in the Ormesby area of Middlesbrough.

Officers traced the ambulance after 10 minutes via its on-board tracking device. A 19-year-old man was arrested.

The vehicle was badly damaged and is unlikely to return to service, said the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS).
