Multiple pile-up leaves man dead | |

One man has died and two others were seriously injured in a multiple-vehicle crash on the M27 motorway in Hampshire. | |
Police, ambulance and fire crews were called to the scene, at junction 11 at Fareham, on Thursday evening. | |
A man in his early 20s was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which led to the closure of the westbound carriageway for at least eight hours. | |
A police spokeswoman said one man was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following the accident. | |
Motorway re-opening | |
A 20-year-old man suffered life-threatening internal injuries in the crash and was taken to the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham, Portsmouth. | |
Another man, aged 28, also sustained serious chest, back and abdominal injuries and was taken to Southampton General Hospital. | |
The motorway was expected to be re-opened to traffic at about 0430 GMT on Friday. | |
At least five vehicles crashed, just before 2000 GMT on Thursday, and police are trying to establish whether any more were involved. | |
Witness appeal | |
"One man has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and is currently in custody helping police with their inquiries," the spokeswoman said. | |
"Officers are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or anyone who may know anyone who was involved in the crash." | |
A 32-year-old man also suffered minor injuries in the crash. All those involved in the crash are from the Southampton area. | |
Witnesses should contact the road death investigation team at Eastleigh police station. |
