Camilla takes on Barnardo's role

The Duchess of Cornwall is to become president of children's charity Barnardo's.

Camilla will follow in the footsteps of Diana, Princess of Wales, who also took on the role.

Barnardo's supports 110,000 vulnerable children across the UK, including many who have been abused or are hooked on drugs.

The duchess will become president in October, replacing Cherie Blair who has held the post since 2001.

Martin Narey, Barnardo's Chief Executive, said: "Her support will be invaluable and help us continue to champion the cause of disadvantaged children."

Barnardo's has 7,000 paid staff and 11,000 volunteers running schemes in homes, schools and communities for vulnerable young people and their families.

Diana was president from November 1984 to July 1996 and attended more than 110 events for the charity.

A Clarence House spokeswoman said: "The Duchess was delighted to accept their invitation to become president and looks forward to having the opportunity to visit some of their projects when she takes up her post later this year."
