A security guard was doused with petrol and threatened with a lighter during a daylight raid at a Post Office in East Kilbride, police said.

A man in his 20s carried out the attack after waiting in the shop toilet for the cash delivery man on Wednesday.

The guard was not injured in the incident at the RS McColls Post Office in Calderwood Square at about 1020 GMT.

The robber escaped in a stolen Mercedes Coupe with a five-figure sum. The car was later found in the Bothwell area.

The suspect had stubble, bushy eyebrows and dark eyes, and was wearing a striped woolly hat.

'Disturbing attack'

He stuffed the stolen money into a blue Lidl carrier bag.

Detective Sergeant Marion Steele, of Strathclyde Police, said: "This was a particularly disturbing attack on the security man, who although uninjured is clearly very distressed by the ordeal."

She appealed for anyone who saw a silver Mercedes near the post office to contact police.

"Also, if anyone saw men fitting these descriptions in the Bothwell area this afternoon, I would ask them to come forward," she said.

"The suspect had no regard whatsoever for the trauma he was putting the victim through, and he must be stopped."
