It comes amid a spell of cold air that has moved in from the Arctic and is expected to keep temperatures low until the weekend.
On Tuesday night, a temperature of -14C (6.8F) was recorded in Dalwhinnie in the Scottish Highlands, making it the coldest night so far this winter.
Forecasters said Scotland could see lows of -15C (5.0F) on Wednesday, which would make it the coldest January night since 2010.
Preliminary readings also showed temperatures of -11C (12.2F) in England, -8C (17.6F) in Wales, and -3C (26.6F) in Northern Ireland.
BBC Weather's Chris Fawkes described the further fall in temperatures as the "sting in the tale" before the cold the snap ends.
"In northern Scotland, there will be another 5cm to 15cm of snow with wind gusts reaching 40-50mph. Expect blizzards and significant drifting of the snow," he said.
"Travelling around in some communities will become extremely difficult. The heavier snow showers could bring a few centimetres of snow just about anywhere in Scotland."
He added that Northern Ireland will see heavier and more widespread snow on Thursday, with 5cm to 10cm in places and a greater chance of disruption.
The amber warning, which covers Shetland, Orkney, and much of Scotland north of Inverness, came into force at 15:00 GMT on Wednesday and will remain until 18:00 on Thursday.

The UK Health Security Agency has issued an amber cold weather alert for England this week, meaning the NHS is expected to come under extra pressure and elderly people or those with underlying health conditions may be more at risk.
The icy winds blowing in from the Arctic have seen temperatures fall 5C (41.0F) to 6C (42.8F) below the average for this time of year.
"For those that don't like the cold weather, there will be a big change this weekend as the weather turns much milder," Mr Fawkes said.
"This change will be accompanied by very strong, possibly disruptive winds gusting up 60-70mph in places. Spells of heavy rain could bring some renewed areas of flooding."
