Affair led to police boss' death

Graham Bird, 40, was found hanging in the garage of the family home near Ottery St Mary by his wife of 19 years, who was also a police inspector. Mr Bird's father told the inquest in Honiton Janice Bird, 40, had an 18-month affair with another officer in the Devon and Cornwall force. Greater Devon Coroner Elizabeth Earland recorded a verdict of suicide. Derek Bird said he had not known about his son's marital problems until he received a letter from Insp Peter Willingham admitting the affair. A statement from Mrs Bird was read to the inquest, saying she and her husband had been trying to resolve their marital problems. Devon and Cornwall Police said: "We will not comment on the private lives of our staff." |
