Airports operator BAA said it was "impossible to say" if there would be any delays to flights. Four flights which were due to land have been diverted to other airports.
Luton and Stansted airports have been closed, while a number of others, including Manchester, Cardiff, Bristol and Birmingham, are also braced for a blanketing.
