The armed man was on foot when he tried to enter the airport, where he was challenged by security guards. A senior police officer at the scene told the BBC the blast occurred after a group of armed men were challenged by security guards near the car park.
Police say the man then opened fire and blew himself up, seriously injuring a security official. Three of the attackers were injured in an exchange of fire. One tried to throw a grenade, but died when it exploded.
