Man charged with stabbing murder Man denies murdering neighbour
(about 7 hours later)
A 43-year-old man has been charged with murder after a man was killed in south Belfast at the weekend. A 42-year-old man has been in court charged with the murder of a man near Belfast city centre last Friday.
The dead man was Daniel Whyte, who was 59, and originally from Bangor in County Down. The court was told John Crolly, of Hartington Court, who has denied the murder, regretted the victim's death because he was a friend.
Mr Whyte died after being stabbed during an incident at Hartington Court at the Dublin Road near the city centre on Friday at about 2030 GMT. Daniel Whyte, 59, and originally from Bangor in County Down died from a stab wound in a flat in Hartington Court.
The accused is expected to appear before Belfast Magistrates Court later on Monday. A police officer told the court a state pathologist concluded the victim died in a "homicidal attack".
The pathologist believed the injury "could not possibly have been committed by a self-inflicted wound", the detective sergeant added.
"We are aware Mr Crolly was in the property at the time when the incident occurred. There were only two people in the property," the officer added.
Mr Crolly, who appeared at Belfast Magistrates Court in a police forensic suit, was remanded in custody.
The defendant's solicitor told the court his client denied the charges and would be applying for high court bail "in due course".
