High-risk sex offender on the run Sex offender found after appeal
(about 1 hour later)
A man described as a high-risk sex offender is on the run in Oxfordshire after failing to keep a curfew. A man described as a "high-risk" sex offender, who went on the run in Oxfordshire after failing to keep a curfew, has been found.
The man has been named by police as Kevin Aldred, a registered sex offender who has been missing since Wednesday. Registered sex offender Kevin Aldred went missing on Wednesday night.
The 39-year-old has been described as "unpredictable" and Thames Valley Police believe he could re-offend if not found. At a press conference in Kidlington on Friday, Thames Valley Police issued an urgent public appeal fearing the 39-year-old could re-offend.
At a news conference in Kidlington, police said Aldred had been sighted near Oxford city centre on Thursday. But Aldred, who had been out of jail on licence, was picked up in the evening and is due to be returned to prison.
Ch Supt Shaun Morley, Oxfordshire Basic Command Unit Commander, said Aldred was not known to be violent. Aldred was released from high-security Wood Hill prison, near Milton Keynes, on licence on 1 December 2006 while serving a five-year jail sentence imposed for two indecent assaults on women.
The offences he was jailed for involved approaching women in the street and sexually assaulting them. He was seen by probation staff on a daily basis under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements - Mappa - in which police and experts work to keep tabs on offenders in the community.
"Intensive police inquiries have been undertaken to locate Kevin and he was sighted yesterday in Oxford," Mr Morley said. Paul Gillbard, Thames Valley Probation Service director of offender management, said: "He was not in the most serious category of offenders, who would be subject to constant surveillance, but he was monitored closely."
We are doing all we can to trace him Ch Supt Shaun Morley
"One of the reasons we are releasing his details to the public is that there is a high risk he will re-offend.
"We are doing all we can to trace him, but would like people to remain vigilant, and ask anyone with information as to his whereabouts to get in touch as soon as possible."
He warned that anyone who sees Aldred should not approach him but call 999 immediately.

Police said, if apprehended, he will be returned to prison even if he has not committed any further offences.
