Robber who drove into Pc jailed

An armed robber who drove a car at a police traffic officer has been jailed for 10 years and eight months at Manchester Crown Court. Scott Jeffries, 20, of Winsford Road, Fallowfield, Manchester, admitted conspiracy to commit robbery last year. He also admitted wounding with intent, after driving at Pc Nigel Poole who tried to pull him over on Merseybank Avenue, Chorlton, on 10 November 2005. Jeffries drove at Pc Poole's motorbike, sending him over the handlebars. A judge at Manchester Crown Court ordered Jeffries to serve a minimum of five years and four months before he is considered for parole. Pc Poole was sent flying over his handlebarsHe was also sentenced for a number of other offences on Friday, which he had previously admitted. These included kidnap, false imprisonment, possession of class A drugs, witness intimidation, conspiracy to commit firearms offences and theft of petrol. He had earlier admitted taking part in five robberies between 13 September and 9 November 2005. The day after the final robbery, motorcycle officer Pc Poole was responding to an unconnected incident when he saw a blue Ford Focus without a front registration plate driving along Merseybank Avenue. As he motioned for the car to pull over, Jeffries, who was behind the wheel, dropped off a female passenger and reversed into Pc Poole, sending him over the handlebars. Jeffries then turned the car around and drove directly at the officer. Pc Poole managed to leap out of the way and crouched behind a parked car. Det Insp Will Chatterton said: "I believe that a very dangerous man has today been taken off the streets of Manchester and I hope that his victims and the wider community take comfort from this." |
