A couple who met while working on Spitfire planes during World War II joined hundreds of people to mark the 70th anniversary of the aircraft.

The Spitfire Anniversary Air Show took place at The Imperial War Museum at Duxford on 2 and 3 September.

The plane holds special memories for Sid and Eileen Denney, who met 60 years ago when they worked on one of the aircraft.

The couple celebrate their diamond anniversary this month.

Sid and Eileen Denney both worked on the aircraft

Mr Denney, 84, was a 20-year-old wireless and electrical mechanic at RAF Lyneham when he met Eileen, then a 19-year-old airframe fitter under training in 1945.

Mr Denney said: "Because of her small frame she was much in demand to work in the tail plane section, while I worked outside more, but we still managed to talk through a hole in the side."

Mrs Denney, 83, added: "I always say I saw more of his rear end than anything, but I still fell for him."

The Imperial War Museum show will feature 17 Spitfires of different marks and more than 60 World War II veterans, including many who served in the Battle of Britain.

The first Spitfire entered service with 19 Squadron at Duxford in August 1938.
