There has been more trouble in the Irish Street/Gobnascale interface in the Waterside area of Londonderry.

Police were attacked by young stone-throwers after they responded to a call.

Chief Superintendent Richard Russell said that everyone had to work together to help stop the violence.

"These are very young children, these are not adults and there are parents somewhere who need to be supervising their young people," he said.

"We have tremendous co-operation from community representatives on both sides and really we are dependent on them getting a grip on this.

"We can come up and police it, but at the end of the day it's a few kids throwing stones and we don't want anybody to overreact."

On Wednesday night, about 30 people were involved in trouble in the area.

Stones were thrown at several police officers when they moved in to keep rival gangs apart.

Residents believe some of the trouble has been organised on the internet and on mobile phones.
