The Home office has admitted an asylum seeker who raped a teenager in Great Yarmouth was due to be deported at the time he committed his crime. Bilal Darioglu, 29, carried out the attack eight months after his appeal to stay in the UK was rejected. Darioglu arrived in the UK seven years ago, applied for asylum and was allowed to live in Great Yarmouth while his claim was considered. Darioglu was jailed for five years at Norwich Crown Court on Wednesday. When news of his conviction for raping a 19-year-old emerged, sources at the Home office denied claims made in court that the asylum seeker had been due for removal and that they had lost track of him. Appeal claims They claimed that he was awaiting the outcome of an appeal and was therefore still allowed to legally live in Britain. But on Thursday night Home Office officials revealed that Darioglu had actually lost his appeal eight months before the attack took place. They also said that when officials called at his home to remove him he had disappeared. A spokesman for the Home office refused to discuss individual cases adding that it tried to remove individuals as quickly as possible. On Wednesday, Darioglu, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to rape and was jailed at Norwich Crown Court. |
