A prisoner had to be saved by warders at Scotland's only women's prison after choking on a massive bag of heroin she was passed during a kiss.

Angela Thomson was on remand at Cornton Vale prison where many inmates are said to have a drug problem.

Stirling Sheriff Court heard how Thomson, 29, received the drugs in a kiss from visitor James Baigan.

A prison officer was monitoring the pair when he thought he saw an object being passed between them.

Thomson, of Baberton Mains Drive, Edinburgh, was told to open her mouth but warders could not see anything.

However, as she was being led back to her cell she began to choke and was only saved because warders gave her first aid.

Thomson pleaded guilty to possessing the class A controlled drug. She was released on bail on the special condition she have treatment for drug addiction.

Baigan, of Hailesland Gardens, also Edinburgh, who admitted possession with intent to supply, had his sentence deferred for a background report.
