A family's pet dog was shot twice as she tried to protect them during an armed raid at their home, police say.

Three men forced their way into the home in Willesden Green, north-west London, and made off with cash, in what police said was a targeted attack.

Nina, a 12-year-old terrier cross, was shot in the face and hind leg as she confronted the raiders on Sunday. The four people in the house were not hurt.

The dog was treated at north London's RSPCA Harmsworth Memorial Hospital.

A family friend, who was in the house at the time, had a gun pointed to her head as the gang searched every room for cash, she told the BBC.

The family's other dog, Cassius, hid from the attackers and was unharmed.

A police spokesman would not comment on the amount stolen in the raid or the weapons used.
