He then spent the next month or so travelling around Europe. He rang us from Madrid, Paris, Lyon, and so on. He tried unsuccessfully to get work. We were at our wits' end. NEW POLICE GUIDELINES ON CANNABIS Users to be arrested and charged if found in possession three times Children under 18 no longer be automatically arrested Officers should consider escorting them home Children under 10 should be referred to child protection authorities We were still extremely troubled. How did it ever come to this? We couldn't understand why a university undergraduate with three A-levels and 10 GCSEs, and a loving family would do such a thing. How did it ever come to this? He doesn't smoke cigarettes, and hardly drinks. He has only been in hospital once - very briefly - in the last year. He seems to be regaining his sense of humour. The impact on my family has been great. Even though James was difficult at home, my wife finds it very hard to cope with him living over 400 miles away. There is also the huge effect this has had on my daughter. Even though she is well-balanced, highly-successful and runs her own business, she has had to go to counselling to try to cope. She was always close to her brother; loves and misses him, and it breaks her heart to see them both drifting apart. There is also the huge effect this has had on my daughter. Fortunately only a minority of cannabis users fall seriously ill. But if people smoke a lot of the drug, and they start smoking at a very early age, then the risk will be far greater. Although it doesn't have the mortality rate of heroin - there isn't the problem with overdoses and dirty needles - it is still a terrible drug.Fortunately only a minority of cannabis users fall seriously ill. The link between cause and effect can be complex. I know in my case, 'issues' came first, cannabis seemed an attractive way to run away from them, and even I can no longer remember or tell whether I smoke due to my problems or whether my problems are largely caused by smoking. I suppose it is both - the classic vicious circle. I am familiar with the 'running-away urge'. But for me it predated first experience of cannabis, though I do think smoking made it worse.Dan, London
For years, I've been told that cannabis is 'the safe drug'. I have never drunk or done any other form of drug, but I did smoke the weed a few years ago, and it was pleasant enough, but I knew when to stop. Unfortunately, cannabis is now grown to be stronger and more potent, and it's 'soft' image means that a large proportion of users feel safe in keeping their habit. Sadly, it is after long term use that the full affects of smoking can become apparent. I used to work in a psychiatric ward where there were several patients who came in due to mental illness triggered or exacerbated by smoking. I think that the law is not taking these things into account. Yes, cannabis may be safe in moderation, but the problem comes because an addict does not know what moderation is anymore.Heather, Wolverhampton
While there are always exceptions the stories are never told about individuals like myself who have smoked every day for 15 years yet manage to maintain a normal lifestyle. Put myself through university, worked full time as an IT engineer with no adverse affects, married, mortgage... It's easy to condemn something people know nothing about. I have seen more lives wrecked by alcohol than I have the weed. M Smith
I started smoking cannabis at the age of 18 and I am now 40 and I still smoke it. While I was a student I did come into contact with people screwed up by it. These were usually heavy users who had been smoking since their mid-teens. From what I understand if you smoke a strong strain during your teens then you are risking psychosis as the brain is still developing. However, if you start once your brain has fully developed the chances are you aren't going to develop the psychosis linked to teen use. Over here in Holland (I am an UK expat) the use of cannabis amongst teenagers is a lot less then in the UK and I reckon this is a consequence of the coffeeshops as there are fewer people dealing outside and the coffeeshops have to be strict about the age of their customers or they can be shut down.Pete, Amsterdam NL
This case outlines the problems of abusing something; what that something is irrelevant. If this chap hadn't had to smoke in private, i.e. if cannabis were legal, then people would have cottoned on to him much earlier and persuaded him to cut back or stop. Abuse can only be controlled if that percentage of society that wishes to use cannabis is able to do so openly.Alan Jones, Stockport
It's not really the cannabis that's destroying his son. It's something else... something much bigger than cannabis. Think lack of self esteem. Think lack of focus or discipline. Think of a need to escape and/or suffering fear of success. Think of sexual insecurities and identity issues. Cannabis is only a vehicle. His son could have used bourbon or something else (in lieu of cannabis) to cope with insecurities.Guy Fox, Florida/Hawaii
The further the acceptability barriers of society are pushed back, the more dangerous the 'daring deeds of youth' will become. What an eye-opening article, I admire the strength of this family and their willingness to inform others of what they are enduring in such a factual and rational manner. As a parent of three teenage youngsters my heart is overwhelmed with emotion for their whole family.H Van Aelst, Brussels, Belgium
