According to the initial findings of an investigation, the woman, who lived in the Nashville area, was “at one point a student” at the school, the Covenant School, although it was unclear when, the authorities said. Officials said the schoolchildren had been escorted out of the building after this morning’s shooting, and were met by their horrified parents. Female assailants in mass shootings in the U.S. are extremely rare, according to the Violence Project, which maintains a national database of mass shootings dating back to 1966. In a data set of 172 mass shootings, defined as involving four victims or more, only four assailants were women or girls. In two cases, women acted alongside a man. There was confusion about the gender identity of the assailant in the immediate aftermath of the attack. Police named the shooter as Audrey Hale, who the chief said identified as transgender. Officials used “she” and “her” to refer to the shooter, who, according to a social media post and a LinkedIn profile, appeared to identify as male in recent months.

The prime minister’s concession came after the head of a powerful far-right political party said he was open to postponing a vote on the judicial changes, and a tumultuous day of behind-the-scenes political wrangling, street protests and strikes that halted some health services and prevented flights from leaving Israel’s main airport. However, Netanyahu indicated no interest in backing away from the overhaul entirely. The prime minister’s concession came after the head of a powerful far-right political party said he was open to postponing a vote on the judicial changes, and a tumultuous day of behind-the-scenes political wrangling, street protests and strikes that halted some health services and prevented flights from leaving Israel’s main airport. For their first edition, they start at the beginning: “Artificial intelligence” was a term coined in the 1950s to describe a machine that could do anything the human brain could do. Progress in A.I. was relatively slow, they write, until the creation of “neural networks” around 2012.To help, my colleagues Kevin Roose and Cade Metz are hosting a one-week crash course (you can sign up here). In an effort to reduce conflict, some conservationists are experimenting with devices that create artificial bee sounds. Elephants have long been known to fear bees, and the digitized buzzing offers a way to ward off the animals without terrifying or harming them.
