A tour helicopter and a light aircraft have collided over the Hudson River near New York City, reports say. A tour helicopter and a light aircraft have collided near New York City and crashed into the Hudson River, the US Coast Guard said.
Witnesses say the accident happened outside Hoboken, New Jersey, just across the river from Manhattan. The collision occurred between Hoboken, in New Jersey, and Manhattan, just across the river.
US media reports say that both aircraft crashed into the river after the impact. Emergency teams and divers are reported to be on the scene. One person had been rescued and teams of divers were searching for other survivors, officials said.
There was no immediate information on casualties. The Coast Guard said one person had been rescued, AP reported. Television footage showed rescue craft heading to the site from both sides of the Hudson River.
A witness told the Associated Press news agency that the plane had lost its wing in the collision and the helicopter "dropped like a stone". "It hit the water like a stone," a woman told local television station NY1.
The helicopter was operated by Liberty Helicopters, a sightseeing operator, US media reported. CNN said six people were on the helicopter. "I saw a piece of metal, I saw a helicopter, the helicopter went down, and that was it. I heard no noise, and no smoke or fire."
Other witnesses described seeing debris - including the plane's wing - falling into the water.
The helicopter was operated by Liberty Helicopters, a sightseeing operator, US media reported. Six people were believed to be on board.
