Two of the four unions involved in a dispute about teacher pay in England will not hold strikes in the autumn term, after accepting a 6.5% pay rise. NASUWT members are taking action short of a strike at schools in England, from Monday, the union says.
Strikes by National Education Union (NEU) staff closed many schools this year. The four teaching unions in a dispute with the government over pay, earlier this year, accepted an offer in July.
The NEU has announced that it would accept the government's pay offer. The ASCL union has also accepted the offer. But the NASUWT said it would continue its campaign for better pay, as well as action over excessive workloads and working hours.
The other two unions in the dispute are recommending members accept the pay rise too - but have not yet announced their decision. Who is taking action short of a strike?
When are teachers striking? No more full strikes are planned, after the largest teaching union, the National Education Union (NEU), as well as the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT), and NASUWT accepted the government's 6.5% pay rise, in July.
No strikes are currently planned. But when it announced its decision, the NASUWT said it would continue its campaign over pay, workloads and working hours, including taking action "up to and including industrial action".Members had already voted for strike action and action short of a strike before the union accepted the government's pay offer.The union has now told members to begin working to rule - limiting their working time by following their exact working hours - from Monday, 18 September.
The four unions involved in the dispute - the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT), NASUWT and NEU - have been putting a revised pay offer to members. Staff at about 10,000 schools could be involved, it says.
ASCL and the NEU have called off their ballots for industrial action since accepting the pay offer. Teachers in Northern Ireland have also been taking action short of a strike since October 2022, as well as NAHT members in Wales since February.
The NAHT and NASUWT unions are yet to announce members' responses. The pay dispute has been resolved in Scotland.
In a joint statement announcing the pay offer in mid-July, the prime minister, education secretary and teaching unions called it "properly funded" and said all schools would receive additional funding "above what was proposed in March".
The 6.5% rise was recommended by the School Teachers' Review Body.
The NASUWT had been considering walkouts next term, after members voted in favour of strike action.
The NAHT is currently reballoting its members on strike action.
The Department for Education (DfE) said further strike action would cause "real damage" to pupils.
No further strike action is scheduled in Wales or Northern Ireland, and the pay dispute has been resolved in Scotland.
