One man, 48, who was shot in the head, was listed in critical condition, the police said in a news release. A second man, 37, who was shot in the torso, was also listed in critical condition. No one was in custody as of Tuesday morning and four detectives were investigating the shooting, the police said.
The three-year-old, who was shot in both legs, was in serious condition, and two other children, 11 and 13, were also in serious condition, the police said, The victims range in age from 3 to 56.
Another woman was struck by a vehicle while attempting to flee from the scene, the police said. She was listed in fair condition with scrapes to her body. A CBS affiliate in Chicago reported that the shooting prompted the authorities to call for at least 10 ambulances. A 15th person was struck by a vehicle while attempting to flee from the scene, the police said. She was in fair condition with scrapes to her body.
No motive has been identified, and there were no known conflicts on that particular corner, Mr. Brown said.
On Tuesday, Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot of Chicago said in a statement that the shooting was “another tragic display of gun violence by cowards indiscriminately shooting into a crowd.”
She urged members of the public to come forward with any information about the shooting.
“None of us can be silent when faced with this kind of tragedy,” she added.
