Both pilots died in the incident in the Siberian city of Irkutsk, governor says Both pilots were killed, but governor says there were no civilian casualties
A fighter jet went down in Russia on Sunday, crashing into a house in a residential area. The incident, in the city of Irkutsk in southeast Siberia, claimed the lives of both pilots, Governor Igor Kobzev has confirmed. Russia's Emergencies Ministry reported on Sunday that two pilots died when a Su-30 fighter jet crashed into a two-story house in the southern Siberian city of Irkutsk. Local Governor Igor Kobzev said there were no other casualties.
The plane crashed into a two-story building, causing a blaze which spanned some 200 square meters, Kobzev wrote on Telegram. A statement explained that the aircraft was conducting a test flight when it crashed. Irkutsk is a major centre for Russia's avitation industry, and is home to production for the Irkut Corporation.
The Emergencies Ministry said that the aircraft was a Sukhoi Su-30 two-seat multi-role fighter, which went down during a test flight. It is the second such incident in Russia this week, and follows a similar incident in Krasnodar region, which left 15 dead and 26 injured.
There were no casualties on the ground as the house was empty at the time, the ministry said. Firefighters have now managed to localize the blaze, it added. Kobzev announced that fire crews and other first responders are working at the site.
