(about 8 hours later)
A teenager injured when hit on the head by a train as he apparently leant out into its path is critically ill after undergoing surgery. A teenager who was injured on a south Wales valleys' station after apparently leaning out from a platform into the path of a train has died in hospital.
The 14-year-old received serious head injuries in the incident at Treorchy railway station in the Rhondda. Schoolboy James Gibbs, who was 15, died in hospital after surgery for head injuries after the incident at Treorchy station in the Rhondda on Thursday.
The accident happened on Thursday as the train with about 60 children on board approached the platform. British Transport Police said the circumstances were under investigation but the death was not suspicious.
British Transport Police said he was critical after surgery at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff. Trained officers will now interview children who saw the incident.
The station was closed as part of the police investigation involving the Treherbert to Cardiff service. James was hit by the Treherbert to Cardiff train just before 1600 GMT on Thursday.
The boy, whose injuries were said to be life-threatening, was initially taken to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital at Llantrisant but later transferred to the University Hospital. Passengers waiting on the platform described seeing the teenager lean out in front of the oncoming train, which has about 60 children on board.
The incident was witnessed by passengers waiting on the station platform along with some of the children returning from school on board the train. He was taken first to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital at Llantrisant but later transferred to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, where he underwent an operation.
An Arriva Trains spokeswoman said about 60 passengers, mostly children, were on the train when the accident happened. The teenager died on Friday afternoon.
She said disruption to the railway had been kept to a minimum but some services were terminated at Ystrad Rhondda for several hours. A police spokesperson said:"Our thoughts are with the family at this very difficult and sad time."
