Northumbria Police said Tomasz's family were "utterly devastated".
Cards left with flowers where he was found describe him as an "amazing friend" and someone "loved and missed by many".
The teenager played at Gateshead Cleveland Hall Community Football Club which said in a statement it was "devastated" to learn of his death.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and anyone that knew Tomasz," it said.

Northumbria Police Ch Supt Helena Barron said the teenager's family were "utterly devastated". In a fundraising page set up in Tomasz's memory, one of his football coaches said he was a "very kind, caring young man" who had been brought to the UK by his parents for a better life and "didn't deserve what has happened to him".
She stressed such incidents were rare in the region and said officers would remain in the area. He said: "He was much-loved member of his local community and will be sadly missed by all who loved him.
"This is every parent's worst nightmare come true and can't imagine what they're going through."
The appeal aimed at supporting Tomasz's family has raised more than £12,000.
