It said the unarmed men had been crawling towards the fence dividing Gaza from Israel, and had failed to respond to warning shots. The incident took place near the Kissufim crossing point. Palestinian officials were quoted by AP news agency as saying Israeli officials told them the men were labourers trying to slip into Israel to find work. The Israeli military also said it had detained a further 40 Palestinians in overnight raids across the West Bank. It said 25 were members of the militant group, Hamas, which leads the Palestinian government. Lebanon inquiry In a separate development, Israeli Defence Minister Amir Peretz has been testifying before the government commission investigating last year's war in Lebanon. Mr Peretz was expected to be asked about his role in the decision-making leading up to the war, and about his consultations with the Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, during it. The outgoing Israeli military chief, Lieutenant-General Dan Halutz, who resigned over the war, and Mr Olmert, are expected to give their testimony in the coming days. |
