Papers focus on ship scavengers
http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/-/1/hi/uk/6289445.stm Version 0 of 1. The newspapers take a wry view of the people salvaging property on a Devon beach from the stricken container ship Napoli. Under the headline "National Lootery", the Sun carries a picture of a new BMW motorbike being driven up the shingle. The Daily Mail front page has a similar picture - and a description of the events as a "free-for-all". The Daily Telegraph has talked to a Swedish couple who were horrified to see pictures of their personal possessions being picked through. 'New Jade' After claims of racism on Celebrity Big Brother, the Daily Mirror and the Sun highlight another apparent row on their front pages involving Channel Four. The Mirror reports the comments of someone it describes as the "New Jade" - Lucy Buchanan, an 18-year-old contestant in reality show Shipwrecked. She made a series of remarks, including how she supported slavery. The network said the views, which other contestants found offensive, do change as the show progresses, the Sun notes. Court warning The Guardian reports plans to boost rape conviction rates are in disarray after judges in England and Wales said they were against law changes. The proposals included a measure to make it easier to convict in cases where the victim has been binge-drinking, the paper says. The Times says magistrates are warning that offenders are being sentenced on the grounds of cost not justice. The comments come in a letter sent to Tony Blair, it reports. Indoor skiing The Daily Express says drivers face having three points added to their licence if they are caught chatting on a mobile phone while at the wheel. For a second day the Independent invites readers to check their shopping baskets for excessive packaging. And the Guardian reports on plans to build the world's largest indoor ski slope at a former quarry in Suffolk. But the £350m project is said to threaten one of the UK's biggest bat roosts in an abandoned chalk tunnel. |
