About 100 firefighters are tackling a blaze in a block of flats in south-east London. Several people are trapped in a burning block of flats in south-east London, the fire service has said.
A London Fire Brigade spokesman said people are believed to be inside the building in Havil Street, Camberwell. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said about 30 people were initially trapped in the 12-storey building on the Sceaux Gardens Estate in Camberwell.
Firefighters using breathing apparatus were called to the scene at about 1620 BST on Friday, the spokesman added. About 100 firefighters are tackling the blaze, which was reported to the emergency services at about 1620 BST.
About 18 fire engines and specialist equipment are being used to tackle the blaze in the 12-storey block, which is believed to have begun in a stairwell. Firefighters using breathing apparatus have removed some of the residents but others remain inside the building.
The fire brigade spokesman said the fire is believed to be in the communal areas between floors four and 11. An LFB spokesman said that the "serious" fire was believed to be in the communal areas between floors four and 11.
"A number of rescues have been carried out in extremely difficult circumstances and fire crews equipped with extended duration breathing apparatus are working very hard to reach those still affected and carry out an exhaustive search of the building," he added.
