School shuts early over swine flu NI boys 'first to get swine flu'
(about 1 hour later)
Two children from Northern Ireland have tested positive for swine flu. A six-year-old boy and his little brother are the first children from Northern Ireland to test positive for swine flu.
As a result, St Ronan's primary school in Newry, County Down, where one of the children is a pupil, will be closed on Monday and Tuesday. The boys and their aunt - who also has the virus - returned home from a family holiday in Mexico last week.
One of the children is six years old and in Primary 2. The other child is of pre-school age. St Ronan's primary school in Newry, County Down, where the six-year-old boy is a P2 pupil, has shut down early for the summer following the news.
They are the first children from Northern Ireland to be diagnosed with the virus. They had recently returned from a family holiday to Mexico. The child's fellow pupils in class have been offered anti-viral treatment.
Pupils and staff at St Ronan's school have been offered anti-viral drugs as a precaution. Some parents from another P2 class are concerned that they haven't been approached.
The school has shut two days ahead of the scheduled summer holidays. However, a spokesperson for the Public Health Agency said only those in contact with the family needed to be concerned.
It's understood the child was at school for just one day, towards the end of the week. It's understood the boys' mother remains in Mexico following a family wedding.
