Papers react to Iran tit-for-tat
http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/-/1/hi/uk/8116038.stm Version 0 of 1. International reaction to the ongoing political turmoil in Iran is the focus for many of the papers. The Independent says Iran's rulers turned their fury to the outside world, starting tit-for-tat diplomatic expulsions with Britain. Iran also accused the head of the United Nations of meddling in the country's affairs, the paper adds. The Times says US President Obama condemned Iran's "iron first" in dealing with protesters on the streets. Hidden addresses The Guardian reports that both Gordon Brown and Tony Blair face the prospect of being questioned in public over the run-up to the Iraq war. The paper says it is a setback for Mr Brown who had hoped the inquiry would be held in private. MPs will continue to censor key details including addresses from their expenses when the next claims are made public, according to the Daily Telegraph. This means second home "flipping" will remain hidden, the paper says. Sun block The Telegraph reports scientists in Canada are trying to breed a cow that emits less wind - to reduce the greenhouse gases the animal produces. The paper says that, at present, cows are responsible for nearly three quarters of all methane emissions. Meanwhile, the Daily Mirror observes the £100m retractable roof at Wimbledon was used for the first time on Tuesday. But not to defy rain - it was employed to block out the strong sun from VIPs in the Royal Box on Centre Court. Winning feeling Pictures of Britain's Andy Murray winning his opening match at Wimbledon are on many of the front pages. The Daily Express says the Scot stayed cool as temperatures soared to 33C to beat American Robert Kendrick. It describes how fans basked in the sunshine as they watched the drama unfold on giant TV screens outside Centre Court on "Murray Mount". With some irony, the Daily Mail reports a Wimbledon shock. A British girl, Elena Baltacha, actually wins, it says. |
