Abduction attempt on young boy Police stand down on 'abduction'
(about 6 hours later)
A 10-year-old boy escaped unharmed when a man tried to abduct him in a street in Glasgow. Allegations about the attempted abduction of a 10-year-old boy in Glasgow have turned out to be false, police have said.
The boy broke free, but was left shaken after the incident in the Gorbals area at about 1930 BST on Thursday. It was reported that the boy escaped unharmed after a man tried to grab him in the city's Gorbals area at about 1930 BST on Thursday.
The man had previously tried to make conversation with another group of boys in Old Rutherglen Road. Police said they were satisfied no attempted abduction took place.
The suspect is described as Asian, in his 40s, approximately 5ft 7in tall, of thin build, clean-shaven and was wearing black clothing. A force spokesman said that inquiries had established that "a number of youths were involved in horseplay".
Sgt Susan Galbraith, of Strathclyde Police, said the boy was with friends when the man started talking to him.
She said: "This was a terrifying ordeal for the young boy to go through and it is being treated very seriously.
"Fortunately, he did the right thing by immediately running home and alerting his mum and thankfully he was unharmed."
Police are viewing CCTV footage and have stepped up patrols in the area to reassure the community.
Witnesses are being urged to come forward.
