Baroness Thatcher is "clearly making progress" after breaking her arm last week but will remain in hospital for now, her son Sir Mark has said.

He said the 83-year-old former PM had a "great night" but doctors wanted to keep her under observation.

"They will consider during the course of the day and see what is the next step," he added.

She was taken to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on Friday after she fell and fractured her arm.

Speaking to reporters after visiting his mother in hospital, Sir Mark Thatcher said: "She had a great night. She is a lot brighter and chatty so that is good. She is clearly making progress so I am happy and delighted."

He said Baroness Thatcher would be going home but added: "It won't be today."

Baroness Thatcher, who led Britain from 1979 to 1990, has become increasingly frail in recent years and has suffered a number of minor strokes. Her daughter Carol has also spoken about her struggle with dementia.

Ill health forced her to abandon her regular public speaking engagements in 2002 but she still makes public appearances.

In March last year she spent the night in hospital after feeling unwell while having dinner with friends.

But last week she was at the Carlton Club in London to mark the 30th anniversary of her historic election victory.
