Lockerbie bomber 'in a quandary'

An MSP has said the man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing is "in a quandary" over whether to drop his appeal against conviction.

The Libyan government has requested Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi be sent home to complete his sentence under a prisoner transfer agreement.

However, that issue cannot be decided while his appeal is ongoing.

The SNP's Christine Grahame said he now faced a "major decision" about whether to continue his legal proceedings.

The south of Scotland MSP was speaking after visiting Megrahi, who has prostate cancer, in Greenock Prison.

She said: "He is a man who is in a great quandary about what he should do.

"He's got this major decision to take at some point.

"I think the issue for Mr Megrahi is that he would want the appeal to continue but at the same time he is desperate to see his family."

Ms Grahame also made fresh claims that evidence used to convict the 57-year-old of the atrocity in which 270 people died was unreliable.

She said she had seen documents which cast doubt on the prosecution case.

She said they showed a fragment of bomb timer was taken to America and not kept in Britain as police had claimed.

Ms Grahame claimed it was clear investigators had not told the truth about it at the original trial.
