Blasts were recorded in Ukraine after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a “special military operation” in the Donbass on Thursday ostensibly to defend the Donetsk (DPR) and Lugansk (LPR) People’s Republics which had formally requested Russian military assistance to combat “Ukrainian aggression.” An adviser for the Interior Minister of Ukraine, Anton Gerashchenko claimed on Facebook that the sounds of explosions that rang out across the city were caused by the Ukrainian anti-missile defense forces shooting down a “hostile aircraft”
“According to operational information, the enemy aircraft was shot down by the Ukrainian air defense forces,” Gerashchenko wrote, adding that the downed aircraft fell near a residential building. The official did not specify the type of the aircraft Kiev reportedly brought down.
Photographs and footage of a burning residential building appeared on social media following the incident, showing firefighters trying to put out the flames. It is not clear whether the fire was caused by debris from the falling craft.
