The current system, set up in 2002, includes mandatory bonuses. The total bonus pay-out for senior civil servants last year was £1.2m.

More than £157,000 was shared last year by 19 senior staff in the Office of the First and Deputy First Ministers.
In the Department of Health 20 senior civil servants shared a bonus payout of almost £161,000.
