Version 0 of 1.

A possible end to the economic downturn is covered in the day's press.

<a class="inlineText" href="http://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/news/analysts-the-recession-has-ended-1702147.html">"The recession has ended" is the eye-catching headline on the front page of the Independent.</a>

But turn the page, and a range of leading businessmen pour cold water on the views of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research.

But, as <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1192139/Recession-ended-months-ago-finance-expert-claims-warning-situation-dire.html">the Daily Mail says, the Institute is not saying everything's fine,</a> and does say "there's a lot of pain to come".

The papers pay attention to the spat between Labour and the Conservatives over public spending.

<a class="inlineText" href="http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/latest/2009/06/10/brown-and-cameron-clash-over-cuts-115875-21429959/">The Daily Mirror says the Tories plan "savage spending cuts".</a>

<a class="inlineText" href="http://www.ft.com/cms/s/063807a4-55f9-11de-ab7e-00144feabdc0,Authorised=false.html?_i_location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ft.com%2Fcms%2Fs%2F0%2F063807a4-55f9-11de-ab7e-00144feabdc0.html&_i_referer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ft.com%2Fworld%2Fuk">The Financial Times describes the remarks made by the shadow health secretary Andrew Lansley as "incautious" and an "apparent gaffe".</a>

<a class="inlineText" href="http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/top-tories-revolt-over-plan-to-cut-spending-1702153.html">The Independent says protecting health and schools while cutting other departments could generate a revolt by other senior Tories.</a>

Several papers criticise the claims made by Gordon Brown about the extent of Tory cuts, should they win power.

The Daily Express says he is "up to his neck in mendacity." <a class="inlineText" href="http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/sun_says/244723/The-Sun-Says.html">The Sun calls his comments "desperate and deceitful." </a>

It says that "both parties will be forced to make substantial cuts after the next election," whoever wins.

Food fight

<a class="inlineText" href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/telegraph-view/5498290/Labour-must-be-honest-about-public-spending.html">The Daily Telegraph says the Tories "are trying to be straight with the electorate over public spending, while the prime minister is not".</a>

<a class="inlineText" href="http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/features/2475318/Feed-the-world-with-British-produce.html">The Sun says that sales of some of the UK's best known foodstuffs</a> are doing rather well overseas.

Our often criticised chocolate is the biggest seller, ahead of breakfast cereals and cheeses.

<a class="inlineText" href="France may be the home of patisserie, says the Times,">France may be the home of patisserie, says the Times,</a> but it turns out that the French are "furtively devouring" our "exceedingly good cakes".

And as for central Europe, the paper says, it seems that "a Hobnob and a nice cup of char" go down quite well.
