First 'home grown' swine flu case
(about 2 hours later) | |
The first case of someone catching swine flu within Northern Ireland has been confirmed by health officials.
The male sufferer had been in contact with a previously confirmed case.
The Public Health Agency is contacting people who were in close contact with the man since he developed symptoms.
Last week, an NI pupil at Eton College in England contracted the virus following an outbreak at the prestigious boys' school.
This first 'home grown' case brings to seven the total number of people from Northern Ireland who have swine flu.
The man has mild flu symptoms and is being treated at home, according to the Public Health Agency (PHA).
"This case was picked up through our follow-up of a previous case here and we will now follow-up anyone who was in close contact with this person after they developed the flu," said Dr Carolyn Harper of the PHA.
"This is the standard procedure in this type of case. People should not be alarmed by this further case and we should expect to see more over the next few days and weeks.
'Good systems' | |
"That has been the pattern in other countries and we are planning for a similar picture here.
"We have good systems in place though to respond to any cases that appear."
On Monday, two cases, a man and woman who had returned separately from the USA, were confirmed. |
