Young set to wrap up Villa switch Young completes £9.65m Villa move
(about 6 hours later)
Watford striker Ashley Young is set to join Premiership rivals Aston Villa on Tuesday in a deal initially worth £8m. Aston Villa have completed the signing of Watford forward Ashley Young for an initial fee of £8m.
The 21-year-old turned down a move to West Ham earlier this month and will now sign for Martin O'Neill's side. The 21-year-old has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal at Villa Park, with clauses meaning his price tag could end up reaching £9.65m.
Add-ons could eventually take the fee above Villa's record of £9.5m but O'Neill said: "Is it a risk? Not to me. "He has got enormous potential and I think he will fulfil that," said Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill.
"He has got great touch and a wee bit of pace too, he can play on both flanks and alongside the centre-forward as well. I am very excited about it." "Ashley is a really talented player. I have seen a lot of him and I am going to back my judgement."

England Under-21 international Young sat out the Premiership match between Villa and the Hornets on Saturday. The England Under-21 international turned down a move to West Ham earlier this month.
My view is he will prove terrific value. Ashley is capable of great things Martin O'Neill Young's basic deal is believed to be worth about £30,000 a weeks, and he is expected to make his Villa debut against Newcastle on 31 January.
Young is expected to make his debut in Villa's Premiership clash with Newcastle at St James' Park on 31 January. "I had been hopeful Ashley would come to Aston Villa after he verbally agreed to join us over the weekend but you never take anything for granted until they sign on the dotted line," added O'Neill.
O'Neill added: "I think he has got enormous potential and I think he will fulfil that. "You think along the lines of `Will he be of value over the next four or five years' and you base your decision on that.
"He is a really talented player. I have seen a lot of him and I am going to back my judgement. "He can play on both flanks and he can play alongside the centre-forward.
"My own view is he will prove terrific value. He is only a young fellow and I have no doubt at all he is good enough. "I think he is an exciting player and has got a great touch, great control, plus a wee bit of pace. I am excited with his signing for us.
"I have been really impressed with him and his maturity. I have seen Watford loads of time this season. When they see me coming, they probably have been thinking 'oh, no, not again!'. "He is only a young fellow and it will be hard to put him under the sort of pressure where he is having to justifying himself from minute one, but overall Ihave no doubt at all he is good enough.
"You think along the lines of 'will somebody be of value over the next four or five years?' and you base your decision on that. I believe Ashley is capable of great things." "I know his potential but it is different knowing the potential of a player and what they eventually go on to achieve. I believe he has the ability to go on and achieve things."
O'Neill also said he was not worried about splashing out so much money on such a young, unproven player. Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd said as many as seven Premiership clubs had expressed an interest in signing Young.

AR class="" href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/606/default.stm">606: Have your say Young broke into Watford's first team in 2003 and established himself as a talent to watch last season, with 15 goals in the Hornets' successful push for promotion.
"I have always been pretty careful with money, primarily because the clubs I've been involved with have not really had that much," said the 54-year-old Villa manager. More to follow.
"It will be the most money I've spent but at my age I've earned the right to do that. Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho and Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson can spend and it's all right.
"Am I supposed to stay down forever?"
