The European Parliament elections will signal the end for the prime minister, the leader of the UK Independence Party has predicted.

Nigel Farage forecast the number of UKIP MEPs would double, with Labour relegated to third or fourth place.

He said: "We've got the chance to cause an earthquake in British politics on Thursday if people go out there and vote for what they believe in."

UKIP, which wants the UK to leave the European Union, won nine seats in 2004.

Mr Farage added: "I do think that we will nationally beat the Labour party into third or fourth place.

"The result of that UKIP vote will bring down Gordon Brown and I'd have thought we'd have been nearer 20 seats than 10."

UKIP spokesman and European Parliament candidate for London Tim Worstall said the party had put down roots since its 2004 electoral breakthrough and would out-poll Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Greens.

"We have gone from being these unknown insurgents to getting our message across," Mr Worstall added.
