GB penalty point loophole 'wrong'

Version 0 of 1.

Penalty points accumulated in Northern Ireland are not recorded in Britain, so motorists could reach up to 18 points without any ban, MPs have been told.

Transport Minister Stephen Ladyman told the Commons Transport Committee that this was an "unacceptable" loophole.

He said the government was dealing with the matter.

Motorists with 12 points on their licence can be banned. But currently, a driver could incur nine points in NI and nine in GB yet escape punishment.

Mr Ladyman said the situation would last for a while longer as primary legislation was required to change the existing regulations.
