Det Insp Stewart Kidd, who is leading the enquiry, said: "Our enquiries are at a very early stage and we are treating this death as unexplained.
"The area is in Banff town centre where people come and go at all hours of the day and night. I am hopeful that someone may have seen something which could assist us."
The road will remain closed to pedestrians and traffic for some time.
