Insp Eamonn Keane said: "Police and ambulance received reports just after 9pm that a man had been injured on the footpath outside the Clifton Arms.
"Tragically, he died shortly afterwards.
"It is a busy road and there were a lot of people out enjoying a lovely summer's evening.
"Many will have seen what happened and I would ask them to contact us."
